Vicissitudes are life changes. Life changes for seniors are apt to be unpleasant. I knew this five years ago when I wrote this verse, and I need to be reminded occasionally.

(A Senior Lament)

I carry my vicissitudes in a most ingenious way.

I put them in a paper sack, and when they get too heavy.

I throw them all away.

For ups and downs do bother me, and likewise ins and outs.

Dealing with life’s extremes can make me want to shout.

I like the old familiar path in the middle of the street.

I  will avoid life’s vagaries too unpredictable to meet.

I find all changes crude, and try to circumvent

Divergences that threaten me, and make me less content.

Oh well. Life happens.
