Seeking Wisdom, Day 19 – Lazy Daisy

March 2, 2016

Solomon enjoins us to industry. Hard work is necessary for a productive life, and we are not to become lazy, and Proverbs is awash with reminders.

(Proverbs 19:24) Lazy people take food in their hand, but don’t even lift it to their mouth.

(Proverbs 14:23) Work brings profit, but mere talk leads to poverty.

(Proverbs 13: 4) Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper.

(Proverbs 21: 5) Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty.

These verses are scattered throughout Proverbs, reminding us of the importance of work. But the poet in us wants to love the work and to know its beauty. Is thinking work? I settled into a glider on the patio to think about it.

A Lazy Daisy Day

Sittin’ in a glider, lazy as can be, every creature’s workin’ ‘ceptin’ me.

There’s a bee a buzzin’ into every flower, and a butterfly a flittin’ into every flower.

A lizard is a stalkin’, don’t know after what, lifts his head a gawkin’, and moves on like a shot.

Plenty of work a waitin’, more than I can say. I’m just a sittin’ here glidin’ on this lazy daisy day.

Watching the work of nature beats everything, and today March is working hard to turn winter into spring.
