Building Faith, Day 29 – Praise Him

January 17, 2016

“Praise him, praise him, all ye little children,

God is Love. God is Love.”

A chorus from my childhood Sunday school classes reverberates in memory. With a 4 year old’s lisp, it came out “pwaise him”, but the joy was fervent. Gratitude feels good. When my Grandmother heard good news, she clapped her hands and said, “Praise the Lord!” I can’t say she was especially religious, as in attending church, but she knew how to give thanks when it was due. How many times do we forget to praise God for the good we see?

God doesn’t need our praise, but we need to express it. Two weeks ago the heavens opened, and rain poured down in sheets upon this drought stricken Southern California earth. Standing at the window, warm and dry, I could only gaze in awe-struck wonder. “Praise God,” I rejoiced. (I hope he will do it again, perhaps a bit more gentle next time.)

Psalm 29 tells us to “give unto the Lord the glory due to his name.” Praise the Lord, for the Lord “gives his people strength. The Lord blesses them with peace.” We will not put the Lord into a closet of silence, but give him the proper place in our hearts and our eternal gratitude with our words.

Praise the Lord oh my soul, and all that is within me. Praise his Holy Name.
