Building Faith, 24 – Ownership

January 7, 2016

Christmas over. Stuff to put away. Gather boxes, find space in closets, and sort the stuff I will want to put out next Christmas, if I can find it. I yearn to own, to gather, to hoard. But ownership is a mind-blowing job.

There is work involved – a house, a car, a garden – so lovely, but they own me. My watch needed a battery: the hall clock needs a repair-man: the car needs servicing: and the garden needs Spring. Ownership has its perils.

Psalm 24 tells us, “The earth is the Lords and the fullness thereof, the world and they that dwell therein.” God takes ownership of us. Imagine that responsibility! God directs the sun, the rain, the birds, the lilies and us. When we obey his rules, we reap the benefit. He keeps us from trouble, and gives us peace. “Who shall ascend to the halls of the Lord? He who has clean hands and a pure heart.”

God owns us and provides for us, and He doesn’t complain about the work involved in ownership. Blessed be the name of the Lord, the King of glory.
